Heat Pump Basics

One System.
Year-Round
Comfort.

A heat pump handles both heating and cooling from a single system. In summer it moves heat out of your home like a standard air conditioner. In winter it reverses the process — pulling heat from outside air and moving it in.

Modern heat pumps work effectively in a wide range of outdoor temperatures, including climates like Northern California's with hot summers and cool winters. Whether you're looking at a central ducted system or a ductless mini-split for a room addition or retrofit, Menini HVAC can size and install the right fit for your home or building.

Air Handlers

The Indoor Half
Of Your System

An air handler is the indoor unit that circulates conditioned air through your home or building when paired with a heat pump. Getting it right — properly matched, correctly installed, and well-maintained — is just as critical as the outdoor unit.

What an Air Handler Does

The air handler contains the blower motor, evaporator coil, and air filter — the components responsible for moving conditioned air through your ductwork. When the heat pump runs, the air handler pulls air from your home, passes it over the coil (which heats or cools it depending on the season), and delivers it back into the living space. In heating mode, the coil absorbs heat from the refrigerant; in cooling mode, it absorbs heat from your indoor air.

Matching Matters

A heat pump and air handler must be properly matched by the manufacturer's specifications. Mismatched equipment — even when both units are high quality on their own — leads to reduced efficiency, premature wear, and potential warranty issues. Menini HVAC specifies equipment as a complete matched system, not individual components thrown together.

Variable-Speed Blowers

Modern air handlers use variable-speed or multi-stage blower motors that modulate airflow based on demand. Rather than running at full blast and cycling off, a variable-speed unit runs longer at lower speeds — maintaining steadier temperatures, reducing humidity better, and operating more quietly. Most of the preferred brands Menini installs offer variable-speed air handler options across their product lines.

Air Handler vs. Furnace Air Handler

In some homes, the heat pump is paired with a gas furnace rather than a standalone air handler — this is called a dual-fuel system. The furnace blower handles air distribution, while the heat pump handles the refrigerant cycle. Menini HVAC can evaluate your existing setup and advise on whether an air handler replacement or a dual-fuel configuration makes the most sense for your home.

Installation & Sizing

Air handler installation involves mounting the unit in the attic, closet, utility room, or basement — wherever the existing or planned ductwork originates. The unit must be level, properly supported, and connected with correctly sized supply and return ducts. Refrigerant line connections and electrical hookup are completed at the air handler, along with drain line routing for condensate. Menini HVAC handles all of this as part of a complete system installation.

Common Questions

Heat Pump
FAQs

Questions about heat pumps, installations, or service? Here are the ones we hear most often. Still have one? Call the shop or drop us a line.

Ask Us Directly
Do you install heat pumps for both homes and businesses?
Yes. Menini HVAC handles residential and commercial heat pump work throughout Northern California. Whether it's a single-room mini-split or a multi-zone system for a commercial building, we can scope and install it.
Can you repair my heat pump if you didn't install it?
Absolutely. We repair all brands of heat pumps, not just the ones we prefer to install. If it runs on refrigerant and has a reversing valve, we can diagnose and fix it.
What's the difference between ducted and ductless heat pumps?
A ducted system distributes conditioned air through your existing ductwork the same way a traditional HVAC system does. A ductless mini-split delivers conditioned air directly into each zone through wall-mounted indoor units, connected to an outdoor unit by refrigerant lines. Ductless is popular for retrofits, room additions, or buildings without existing ductwork.
Do heat pumps work in Northern California's climate?
Yes. Northern California's climate — with its hot dry summers and mild to cool winters — is well-suited for heat pump systems. Modern heat pumps are designed to operate efficiently across a broad outdoor temperature range. We can walk you through what system makes sense for your specific location and home.
How often does a heat pump need service?
Manufacturers generally recommend professional servicing once a year, typically before the season your system will work hardest. Regular service catches developing problems early, keeps the system running efficiently, and can extend the life of the equipment. We'll give you a straight assessment of what your system actually needs.
Do you offer free quotes on installations?
Yes. Contact us through the website or call the shop and we'll arrange a time to come out, assess your space, and give you a quote. We do proper load calculations — no guessing on system size.
Thank you so much for your excellent service and professionalism. I most appreciate your ability to do a great job under my given time constraint. You really exceeded my expectations — such a commitment to great customer service is to be commended.
