A mini split — also called a ductless mini split or ductless heat pump — is a heating and cooling system that doesn't require ductwork. It connects an outdoor compressor unit to one or more indoor air handlers mounted on the wall or ceiling of individual rooms or zones.
Because there's no duct system to lose energy through, mini splits are highly efficient. They're an ideal solution for additions, garages, sunrooms, older homes without existing ductwork, or any space where running ducts isn't practical.
Many modern mini split systems are heat pumps, meaning they can both heat and cool — making them a year-round solution. Some configurations pair an outdoor heat pump with an air handler for whole-home coverage.

- A small hole through the wall carries refrigerant lines and electrical wiring — no ductwork needed.
- One or more indoor air handler units mount on the wall or ceiling in the conditioned space.
- In heating mode (heat pump), the system extracts heat energy from outdoor air and moves it inside. In cooling mode, it does the reverse.
- Each zone is controlled independently — you heat or cool only where you need it.
